Rutland Hotel supports Sheffield University Prize!

Sheffield’s largest independent four star hotel is celebrating further developing its links with the University of Sheffield by presenting one of its students from The MA in Early Childhood Education course with a prize at the January graduation ceremony for the third year running.
Jo-anne Lamb graduated at the Ceremony held at the Octagon Centre on January 12th, and was awarded the ‘Rutland Hotel Prize for Early Childhood Education at the Graduation Ceremony.’
Katey Dent, Sales Manager, commented: “The Rutland hotel has worked with various departments from the University of Sheffield for many years now for accommodation and events, including hosting the Early Childhood Education weekend study schools. It was a natural link for us to sponsor a prize to show support for each other while working together”.

Dr Jools Page, Programme Director for the MA in Early Childhood Education, said: “Our MA in Early Childhood Education continues to go from strength to strength and we are delighted to continue our collaboration with the Rutland Hotel. We recognize the work of all our students but Jo-anne’s research into Forest schools was academically outstanding and she proved a worthy winner of the Rutland Prize”.

Professor Jackie Marsh, Head of the School of Education, said: "I congratulate Jo-Anne on being awarded the Rutland Prize for Early Childhood Education 2011. The School of Education is delighted to collaborate with the Rutland Hotel on this prize and we thank them for their support and generosity, which is a wonderful accolade for our students' achievements."

The winner of the prize, Jo-anne Lamb from Norfolk, was thrilled and commented “I still can’t believe I won, but I am so happy! I have had some good times in Sheffield while studying and will be delighted to return back to the Rutland hotel for a stay in an executive room with dinner and breakfast which was part of the prize”.

Robert Hyman, Deputy General Manager, was delighted to attend the graduation ceremony and present the prize to Jo-anne. Robert helped run the Early Childhood weekends at the Rutland Hotel that Jo-anne attended during her two year part time study.

Jo-anne also won an engraved paperweight and £100 in cash.

A team from The Rutland Hotel on Glossop Road in Sheffield are celebrating after all completing the Sheffield Bupa 10k run last Sunday.

The team of 11 were running and raising money for the South Yorkshire Heart Appeal which is the hotels chosen charity for 2011/2012.

Katey Dent Hotel Sales Manager said “The SYHA is close to the hearts of the staff at the hotel as we have many families staying at the hotel whose relatives are having some form of surgery at the Sheffield Hospitals. We wanted to stand out from the crowd at the run so all donned branded T shirts and had heart shaped balloons and heart boppers on our heads, as well as carrying a hospital stretcher from start to finish with one of the team dressed as a heart surgeon!!”

Katey added “The day was amazing, two of the team has injuries on the day and one of us had to limp all the way to the finish – but we all did it and have raised well over £2000 for the appeal”.

Staff at the Rutland Hotel have taken on the challenge of running the10k Bupa Great Yorkshire Run on Sunday 9 October, to help raise funds for the South Yorkshire Heart Appeal.

The Appeal supports specialist cardiac services, and world class research at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. These services help save lives in the region, by reducing the odds of death from coronary heart disease which remains one of theUK’s biggest killers.

‘Team Rutland’ have been training for the last three months to get themselves fit for the big event. Most of the team of nine have not even run before and have had to work hard to ensure they can cover the miles on the day. Some have suffered minor injuries, such as pulled hamstrings, but are still determined to complete the race.

Katey Dent, Sales Manager at the Rutland Hotel said:” When I first started training, I couldn’t even run to the end of my street, so this is a real challenge for me, but I was determined to be part of the team. Relatives of patients often use the hotel so we see first hand how important access to quality health care is and this is our way of helping to support this.”

The Rutland Hotel has a long standing relationship with Sheffield Hospitals Charity and has previously raised funds for their Sheffield Cystic Fibrosis Appeal. This year the hotel has chosen to support the Heart Appeal and the 10k run is to launch the start of their ongoing support. The team will be clearly visible on the day as they will be running with heart shaped items to help raise awareness of the appeal.

Carol Denton, Fundraiser for the Appeal welcomed the support and commented: “Heart disease is higher than average in South Yorkshire so it is even more vital that we can help contribute to ensuring that the Cardiothoracic Centre remains one of the leading facilities for providing cutting edge treatment and undertaking world class research.”

We just wanted to write to express our sincere thanks and gratitude for the way our wedding at the Rutland on Friday 9 September was managed.

From the moment we booked the hotel 18 months in advance right through to the day itself the service we received was highly professional and without fault. All the way through we felt very confident that we had selected the right venue.

Many of our guests have commented on how much they enjoyed both the day and the venue.

The food at both the Wedding Breakfast and in the evening was excellent and the evening disco was fantastic and enjoyed by everyone.

Sheffield Review - The Leeds Guide

I think I’m in love. His dark, pool-deep eyes look into mine as I stroke my hand through his wiry hair. Meerkats are probably not the best of pets, though and this one looks pretty happy to continue being shown round the visitors at Sheffield’s Butterfly House. My partner and I have come to see the new prarie dog residents – similar to meerkats but, as they bask in the sun in their expansive enclosure, seemingly a bit more chilled out – along with other residents including pigs, goats, rabbits, skunks, birds of prey and of course, butterflies.

It’s a really sweet place with obvious emphasis on caring for the animals and educating youngsters. As you’d expect, the meerkats keep small crowds amused for hours but we’re most enamoured by the tiny goat kids in the Small Animal House, who trot over to lick our hands and generally turn us to mush. The butterfly house is very impressive, larger than our beloved Tropical World in Roundhay, it houses snakes and spiders (thankfully housed in tanks) as well as myriad types of butterly, terrapins, fish and a huge lizard (unhoused, as we found to our surprise when we came face to face).

We’ve become quite obsessed with the staycation, my partner and me. The equivalent of putting a pin in a map, only with slightly more background information, we’ll search www.yorkshire.com and pick a destination, generally based on how many cute animal opportunities it boasts. Sheffield won out this time, and before our visit to the Butterfly House, booked in at The Rutland Hotel, about a ten minute walk from the city centre.

The hotel’s entrance at the back does little to give away the beautiful garden with water feature and boutique bedrooms, so we are suitably impressed when we arrive in the Dainton Suite. Exposed brick, wood panelling and rich-hued furnishings prevail and there’s a hamper full of local delights, including the ubiquitous Henderson’s Relish. There are also two wet rooms, which even I don’t manage to fully take over with cosmetics and candles.

We enjoy the last rays of afternoon sun – is it just me or is South Yorkshire just a teeny bit more clement? – with drinks in the pretty garden. The restaurant boasts a conservatory and tasteful furnishings which remind me of a health spa; only with more Yorkshire puddings, naturally. We’d vowed to spend more time after tea exploring the greenest city in Europe (Sheffield has a record-breaking 2 million trees and 5,500 plant species, apparently) but a big meal and inviting bed put paid to this. We’ll return soon anyway… we hear there’s another wildlife park just around the corner.

They’ve been shortlisted to win the Sheffield Smile Award, sponsored by The Star.

It honours the hospitality worker who brightens everyone’s day with their warm, friendly personality, as they help to make Sheffield a destination of choice.

The category is part of the Hospitality Sheffield Awards, this year at the Holiday Inn Royal Victoria, on Thursday, September 29.

Hosted by the BBC’s Tom Ingall, the awards reward the best in the city’s vibrant hospitality industry, which includes hotels, events and conference venues.

They focus on the hard work and talent of people working in the industry.

Expert judges have already been busy picking this year’s winners. All that is except the person who will walk off with The Star’s Sheffield Smile Award – because we want YOU to decide.

Today we are calling on our readers and web users to put a smile on the face of the eight finalists. The one with the most votes win.

* ELIZABETH CASS, 32, Bar and lounge waitress, Doubletree by Hilton (formerly Sheffield Park Hotel). “If the hotel had a landlady, then Liz would be the one! She is cheerful, chatty, compassionate, a confidante and likes a bit of gossip! She has only to meet someone once and can immediately remember their preferred beverage and where they like to sit. Liz also has a sensitive and caring side to her personality and studied for a qualification in British sign language to assist guests with hearing difficulties at work. Recently Liz achieved a lifetime ambition of performing a parachute jump to celebrate her 30th birthday.

* SCOTT KRISTEN, 37, Receptionist, Kenwood Hall. “Every day, morning, evening or night Scott has a fantastic smile on his face. Scott won Kenwood’s Quality Winner Award in May for providing excellent service and assisting in getting a guest medicine when she was unwell. Scott’s positive attitude is recognised throughout the building by guests and colleagues receiving positive feedback on a monthly basis. Colleagues notice his friendly personality as he is always open to offer a helping hand if others need it. One guest said, ‘Nothing was too much for Scott, very helpful - thanks’.”

* SAM LEWIS, 19, Food and beverage assistant, Tankersley Manor Hotel:

“Sam is a keen amateur dramatics star and has recently given three show stopping performances this year with Take 2 Academy Theatre. Despite his young age, Sam has a high level of maturity and takes his job very seriously - no task is ever too large and shift is ever too long. A locally grown gem, Sam works here with other members of his close family. He is very friendly and goes out of his way to be hospitable to everyone. Couple tie the knot for second time @ Rutland Hotel Sheffield!

A COUPLE who were reunited by a picture from their original wedding - after not seeing each other for 26 years - have tied the knot a second time.

Ann and Chris Jackson divorced over a quarter of a century ago but were brought back together when a picture of the happy couple at their first wedding was featured in a book.

Now the lovebirds have enjoyed their second wedding together, attended by family and friends, to make the fairytale reunion complete.

The rekindled romantics were joined by 140 guests for a service at The Rutland Hotel in Broomhill, Sheffield, and they are now looking forward to a short honeymoon break in Whitby, North Yorkshire.

A delighted Ann said: “It was lovely. Everybody had got a bit older but it was fantastic to see them all there! There were more people at our second wedding than we had at our original service. They were all excited for us and crying, it was wonderful.”

Ann, who remarried in 1990 to become Ann McCreesh, said: “I was really happy when the vicar said I was called Mrs Jackson again. It just felt right.”

The couple who had submitted the picture which got them back together - Jacqueline and Orrett Hanson - attended the service too and Ann’s nephew Gary, who was just three years old at the first wedding, was Chris’ best man. Ann’s son Josh, 21, gave her away.

Ann, now 54, originally met Chris, 60, at her brother’s wedding in 1973, when she was just 17. They quickly began dating and married in 1977 before moving closer to Chris’ family in Wrexham, North Wales - a move which was to put a strain on the relationship.

Ann felt isolated because Chris was working long hours as a trucker for his family’s haulage business, meaning the couple slowly drifted apart and eventually divorced in 1985.

After returning to Sheffield where she became landlady of The South Sea pub in Broomhill, Ann met Shaun McCreesh. The couple married and had two children - Josh, and Ellie, now 14 - before divorcing in 2009.

Ann swore off men forever... until, a year later, she was told about a book in which her first wedding photograph was featured - The Dirty Stop Out’s Guide to 1970s Sheffield.

Inside the book was a snap of newlywed Chris and Ann sitting on the stage at their reception venue, the Hofbrauhaus, in an image which tugged at Ann’s heartstrings.

She phoned Chris to invite him to the book’s reunion launch night and, four days later, the former lovers met up.

Chris popped the question for the second time just three weeks later.

Ann, from Wadsley, said: “I was a nervous wreck before I rang Chris for the first time after all those years. It was amazing when we spoke though, it felt right again.

“He told me he’d only ever had one love and had sworn never to marry again. He kept that promise until he asked me to marry him – again.

“I can’t believe I am so lucky as to have another shot at happiness, and with a man I was already married to.”

Chris, who has sold the family business in Wales and moved to Sheffield to be with Ann, said: “I never stopped loving her, and I never remarried.

“You only get one love in your life, and she was mine.”

Joe and the guys, backed by The Quireboys made a special appearance at The Sheffield City Hall with grammy nominated Paul Rodgers – which was a sell out gig.

Rutland General Manager Jason Horton was pleased to meet up with celebrity chef Matt Tebbutt from Sky's Market Kitchen recently during a visit to the Sheffield Hendersons relish factory.

Matt and the Sky crew were filming for the new series at the famous Sheffield sauce's factory, and in order to try the sauce, Rutland hotel chef prepared a tasty meat and potato pie to sample the goods!

Hendersons relish and the Rutland hotel have been working together for a few years now - both are independant businesses in Sheffield and support each other.

Chart topping girl band the Saturdays recently stayed at the Rutland Hotel Sheffield while on route to another of their gigs!!

The hotel was shown on their tv series on BBC3, with the girls having fun practising thier dance routines in the corridoors and relaxing in the hotel bedrooms.

Hotel Manager Jason Horton commented "The girls were really lovely! I am a huge fan, and it was great to meet them all, especially Frankie!"

The Saturdays are just one of many groups who hang out at the city hotel. Being just on the outskirts of Sheffield, its easier for famous guests to hang out out without being bothered for autographs and photos.

90th birthday friends reunite

Kate Manterfield and Marjorie Jones were born on the same Sheffield street and have been pals for 85 years, with their friendship lasting through World War Two and outlasting both their marriages.Marjorie, aged 89, emigrated to Canada in 1952, but the pair kept in touch, phoning and writing regularly and taking turns to visit each other every year. They reunited at Kate's 90th birthday party at the Rutland Hotel in Broomhill.Kate and Marjorie were both born on Nottingham Street, Pitsmoor, and attended the same Sunday School. They both married in 1942, Marjorie to husband Elwyn at Crookes Baptist Church, and Kate to entertainer Leslie Manterfield at All Saints Church, Brightside.Leslie performed as a magician, appearing on cruise liners such as the QE2, and also took his act to The Moor in Sheffield as part of an event called The Moor The Merrier.Kate later joined him, making up the duo The Manterfields."I used to sing, and also I did a memory act on my own," she said. "He was very well-liked."Majorie was a bridesmaid at her friend's wedding day - but Kate was unable to return the gesture as she was fulfilling bridesmaid duties at her brother Ralph's wedding.After working for Sheffield accountants Poppleton and Appleby for 40 years, Kate set up her own hairdressing business at home, which she ran until the age of 82.Marjorie was a comptometer operator at Peech and Tozers steelworks before setting off for Hamilton, Ontario in Canada. She has two children, Glenys, 60 and Trevor, 52."She's lived in Canada for over 50 years, but she's as English as I am," Kate said. Kate has a son, Ralph, 65, who lives in Heeley, Sheffield."It doesn't feel like my 90th birthday," she added. "We've been in touch for a long time. I've never heard of a friendship that's lasted as long. Some people don't even live that long, but we've managed to keep going. Marjorie celebrates her 90th in October, and is planning to take a ride in a Lancaster bomber.

What a brave soul!! Kirsty Butterfield, Manager of the Rutland hotel took the plunge three times – all in aid of charity though of course!
Kirsty took part in the Triple whammy held at Magna Science Centre on Sunday 13th June in aid of the £1 million Cystic Fibrosis Appeal.

The event consisted of a 250ft Zip slide flying through the air at 25 miles per hour, an Abseil with a 150ft drop and finally a freefall jump into a Powerfan! The event was held in semi-darkness with music, dry ice and disco lighting!

Kirsty said “This was the scariest thing I have ever had to do! I had butterflies the night before thinking about it, but I knew all would be ok!” She continued “It was for our adopted charity Cystic Fibrosis which is a great cause, and one we are proud to support at the Rutland hotel”.

The money raised will help go towards building a 12 bed inpatient facility for Cystic Fibrosis sufferers at the city’s Northern General hospital.

Katey Dent Sales Manager commented “The Rutland has a long association with the medical sector and the hospitals in Sheffield, and we look forward to continue supporting such great causes into the future”.

Wedding belles were certainly in the air at the Rutland hotel for the Galaxy wedding of the year! The winners, the newly married couple Gemma and Richard Hurst, were short listed from hundreds of entrants at the Rutland hotels open event on May 9th. They had to be filmed in the ‘Love lounge’ giving reasons why they should win the wedding, and the listeners of the show voted for the best couple. On winning Gemma commented “Nothing like this ever happens to us, we are so happy!”.
Gemma and Richard then had only a week to finalise plans for the wedding. Gemma added “It’s been a whirlwind week; my feet haven’t touched the floor!”
The happy couple who live in Sheffield, won a full wedding package at the newly refurbished Rutland hotel, which included a scrumptious 4 course wedding breakfast, drinks package and evening BBQ. They also won the wedding dress, cake, rings and flowers – the full package!
Katey Dent Sales Manager at the hotel commented “The day was perfect, Gemma looked amazing in her Choola dress and the weather was just lovely. The hotel wedding function rooms have all been refurbished this year, and the room looked amazing where they had the wedding breakfast”.

Easter came early to the Rutland Hotel Sheffield with an Easter themed chocolate event hosted by the hotel for the Sheffield University Secretaries Forum!

A fun night was had by the 50 PA’s and secretaries who work for the University of Sheffield on Thursday 25th March, including arrival Easter cocktails complete with decorative fluffy yellow chick and tables decorated with vases filled with coloured eggs and daffodils!

Hotel Sales Manager Katey Dent Said “Due to the location of our hotel, Sheffield University use our hotel for accommodation, meetings and private dinners, and this was a great opportunity to show off the new refurbishment of the hotel reception area and meeting rooms.”

After cocktails and show rounds of the hotel, the guests tucked into our Head Chefs famous Pie and Peas, followed by the Chocolate Tasting event run by The Chocolate Box of Dronfield. The guests had to taste the chocolate and guess the flavours, which included Strawberry & Basil and Earl Grey! Chocolate prizes where awarded to the winner and runners up of course!

Katey continued “Everyone had a great time – we have always had a good relationship with the University of Sheffield, and long may it continue. Past events have included BBQ & Belly dancing and a Halloween themed event”.

The Rutland Hotel, Glossop Road, Sheffield is supporting education in the city by sponsoring a coveted new award for students at the University of Sheffield.

On Friday 15th January 2010 the inaugural Rutland Prize for Early Education 2009 was presented to Jackie Musgrave, who was chosen from a shortlist of candidates studying for a Masters Degree in Early Childhood Education.

Jackie received an engraved paperweight, £100 cash and a certificate to mark her success - and celebrated with a complimentary stay at the Rutland Hotel.

Prizewinner Jackie said: “I was delighted to receive the Rutland prize. Just to know that I had won it would have been enough without the amazing generosity of the Rutland Hotel. I spent most of my prize on an important new book for my doctorate.

“Staying at the Rutland for the two years I was doing my MA was hugely enjoyable. The hospitality was homely and at the same time professional. I was especially grateful that the hotel always catered for my gluten free diet so imaginatively.”

Jools Page, Programme Director for the MA in Early Childhood Education, added: 'The MA in Early Childhood Education at the University of Sheffield draws students from all parts of the globe. It is testament to the quality of the programme and to the calibre of work produced by the students that a shortlist of six nominees was put forward.”

Professor Cathy Nutbrown, Director of Studies in Early Childhood Education, said: "We are delighted that our established partnership with the Rutland Hotel has led to the sponsorship of this new prize. It recognises the quality of our MA in Early Childhood Education and demonstrates the way in which The Rutland values having our students as guests during their study school weekends in Sheffield."

The Rutland’s contribution was also recognized by Jackie Marsh, Professor and Head of School of Education. “The School of Education is delighted to work in partnership with the Rutland Hotel in the development of the Rutland Prize for Early Childhood Education. Red devils from Sheffield's Rutland Hotel put their walking boots on to raise vital funds for their adopted charity NeuroCare.

Their sponsored November Firewalk over 20 feet of burning coals raised £600 for the charity, which supports the Neurosciences Department at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital.

Earlier this year The Rutland handed over a cheque to NeuroCare for £3,600 after guests donated £1 each from their bills.

The pie's the limit for Sheffield's Carol Burkay, whose culinary skills have won her a cooking competition organised by the city's Rutland Hotel.

The Rutland challenged budding chefs to create a new signature dish using the locally produced Henderson's Relish as the key ingredient, and it was Carol whose recipe tantalised the judges' taste buds the most.

She was invited into the Rutland kitchens to make her Leavygreave Pie - which takes its name from the home of the famous Henderson’s Relish located on Leavygreave Road in Sheffield - for head chef Jason Horton, who has now added it to the hotel's traditional 'Yorkshire Six' menu of winter warmers.

Carol, who married recently, won a stay in the hotel's exclusive Hurlstone Suite with dinner for two and Champagne on arrival, and to make her prize even more tasty, Henderson's also donated a special gift box.

"It was great fun showing Jason how to make the pie. It's my Sheffield take on Cowboy Pie - a good hearty dish for a cold winter's night," she smiled.

Chef Jason, pictured with the proud winner, said: "Carol's Leavygreave Pie is already proving a winner. The world-famous Henderson's Relish is synonymous with Yorkshire, which is why we were keen to include a Henderson's based dish on our menu. It's another example of The Rutland's commitment to local produce and local suppliers."

500 grms Steak Mince
1 large chopped onoion
1pt Beef Stock (using 2 x stock cubes)
1 large tin Heinz Baked Beans
4 tablespoons Henderson’s Relish
750 grms Potatoes - peeled and cubed
Butter
Milk
Salt & Pepper to taste
1oz Grated Cheese
Hendersons Relish Crisps - crushed

Method:

1. Cook mince and onion in beef stock. Drain.

2. Boil and mash potatoes adding butter, milk and seasoning

3. Add baked beans and Henderson’s relish to mince.
Place in an oven proof dish.

4. Place mashed potatoes on top of mince smoothing over top.

5. Add grated cheese on top of potatoes and grill until golden and melted.

6. Sprinkle Hendersons Relish crisps on top for an au gratin finish.

7. Serve hot on its own or with vegetables.

NEWLYWEDS Joe and Kaz Tulley had a 'wheelie' great start to their marriage – as the first new bride and groom to take a whirl on Sheffield's big wheel!

The happy couple went for a spin on the city's newest tourist attraction after getting hitched in the Town Hall.Joe, aged 30, and Kaz, 31, from Killamarsh were watched on the Fargate attraction by their guests as they opted for a unique way to celebrate their first few minutes as man and wife.Joe's dad Ernest Tulley, 58, from Killamarsh, said: "They checked a few days before the wedding if they could take a ride in all their wedding regalia and the organisers said it was fine."It's nice to think they're the first new bride and groom to have been on the wheel in Sheffield. When they came down they said the views were amazing, they could see so far across the city."Joe, a session musician, met Kaz, a receptionist, five years ago when he was a playing in the band Slipstream.

They have an 18-month-old daughter, Heidi.After getting off the wheel, the couple joined 150 guests for a reception at the Rutland Hotel in Glossop Road, Broomhill.

Belly dancers stole the limelight when Sheffield University Forum attended a 'thank-you' event at the city's popular Rutland Hotel.

Secretaries and PA's from the University were entertained by Josephine Chapman's dance group Sia Sano - before trying the ancient technique for themselves!

Jean Lazenby, of the University's Medical School, quipped: "The four dancers were so energetic and fit but those of us who volunteered to have a go did incredibly well."

Forum members, who also enjoyed a barbecue provided by Rutland's Head Chef Jason Horton, and enjoyed the home-made beef burgers so much they all took away a copy of the recipe.

Katey Dent, Sales Manager at the Rutland, put the event on to thank the group for their use of the hotel facilities each year. She also gave them a guided tour of the hotel's refurbished bedrooms, suites and function rooms, which hold up to 100 delegates.

BUSINESS PIONEER A RUTLAND GUEST

A former Sheffield student who graduated in 1951 was a guest at the Rutland Hotel for the Chancellor of the University's recent retirement dinner.

Austin Cole, pictured at the hotel with manager Kirsty Butterfield, enjoyed a successful and distinguished career after gaining a place at the school of architecture at Sheffield University back in 1946.

Born in 1922, Mr Cole worked alongside Charles Darwin's granddaughter during the six years he spent with Naval Intelligence prior to taking up his position at the University.

Upon graduation he ran a full blown architectural practice in Cambridge and was commissioned by prominent families and a London Bond street firm to produce office buildings, factories and retail and wholesale developments.

He also designed the first petrol station in the shape of Stonehenge in Sheffield, and is the author of 'Top Hats, White Tie and Clodhoppers', available at Waterstones for £8.99.

Summer has finally arrived and the chefs at the Rutland Hotel have created a new summer Yorkshire Six menu to compliment the great British summer.

As always, the ingredients are sourced form local suppliers such as Round Green Farm Barnsley, Temple meats of Rotherham, Fresh fruit and vegetables from Country Fresh of Sheffield, Cheese form Michael Lee of Wakefield, dairy from Moseley’s of the Rivelin Valley and not forgetting Bakewell puddings, not to be confused with Bakewell Tart, from the Old Original Bakewell Pudding Shop. (The puddings may be from Derbyshire but is a local, Sheffield, well loved tradition and only a 20 minute drive from the hotel)

'AUSSIE' COUPLE RETURNS TO SHEFFIELD ROOTS

Two former Sheffield University students who married in the city before beginning a new life Down Under have re-traced their steps - 30 years later.

Steve Walters and his wife Alison celebrated their wedding day at the Rutland Hotel in 1979 and were back there this week for a nostalgic visit, staying in the luxurious Hurlstone Suite.

"It was great to come back to the Rutland after all this time and be so well looked after," said Steve. "It has just as much character as it did all those years ago and the refurbishments are fantastic. We couldn't believe how big the University has grown, and how the city has changed."

Now a professor at the University of Queensland, Steve achieved a first class honours degree in Science and Geology before gaining a PHD in the city and becoming a prize-winning graduate. Alison read English Literature at the same University and worked for the Sheffield Star and Sheffield Telegraph.

The couple, pictured at the Rutland three decades ago, and again on this week's visit, jetted off to Australia when Steve was recruited by BHP, living in Brisbane and then Adelaide.

Four dedicated employees at Sheffield’s largest independent hotel, The Rutland on Glossop Road, have been rewarded for clocking up 100 years of loyal service.

Night Porter Tony Lancini, 72, who started work at The Rutland Hotel back in 1977, is the longest serving of the quartet. He claims to know all the ghosts by their first names - and their habits!

Mercedes Martinez, 71, joined two years later than Tony. A breakfast waitress, she was originally employed by her husband who was restaurant manager at the time.
Working alongside Mercedes is 70-year-old Marie Panks, who joined The Rutland in 1982. Despite her advancing years she continues to work six days a week, getting up at 5am to make sure guests receive an enjoyable breakfast.

The junior member of the hard-working group is Emmanuel Okereke, 68, who joined the hotel 10 years ago as kitchen porter and still works five days a week "just to keep tabs on the youngsters."

Hotel Director Craig Dowie says: "Their long service demonstrates how much our staff enjoy working at The Rutland Hotel. Such loyalty and experience makes sure our guests always have an enjoyable stay."

DINERS at The Rutland Hotel in Sheffield are tucking into the original world famous Bakewell puddings - and they simply can't get enough!

The Old Original Bakewell Pudding Shop, which produces the popular Derbyshire delicacy, is also providing Sheffield's largest independent hotel with freshly baked bread and scones.

The Rutland’s Head Chef Jason Horton says: "The original Bakewell Pudding is going down a treat in our restaurant and as a room service snack. The puddings are fresh and hand-made, and our diners just love them."

The Rutland's link up with the traditional bakery is enhancing the Yorkshire South ‘Take A Peak’ promotion, which is encouraging tourists to visit the Peak District and stay in Sheffield.

As well as the Peak District’s most famous pudding, a variety of breads provided by The Old Original Bakewell Pudding Shop is also proving a big hit with residents and diners alike.

The under 11’s, who play in the 'Ideas2develop' Sunday League, received their Fair Play trophy at a special ceremony held at The Rutland Hotel.

Alistair Eaton, who manages the Rangers, said: "Our boys worked very hard throughout the season, in some awful weather conditions and up against some very good teams.

"Maintaining a high standard of conduct on the field of play is an important quality for all fledgling footballers and I am very proud of our team for winning this award. Our aim is to finish in at least a mid-table position next season, when we will again be sponsored by The Rutland Hotel."

Staff at The Rutland Hotel will be looking even more fashionable this summer, thanks to a group of Doncaster students.

Youngsters on the BA Hons Fashion & Textile Design course at Doncaster College have been challenged to create new uniforms for The Rutland Hotel, Sheffield and its sister hotel, The Crown Hotel in Bawtry.

"I want them to come up with something that is smart but trendy, reflecting the contemporary style of both The Crown and The Rutland," says Hotel Director Craig Dowie. "They have already developed some exciting ideas and I am looking forward to seeing my staff wearing the new designs later this year”.

Already the Doncaster College students have proven they have the flair to rise to just about any challenge. They designed an evening dress for opera singer Claire Groom's performance at the Royal Opera House in London; theatrical attire for the complete cast of The Marat Sade, which toured around Yorkshire; and even completed the design and manufacture of the Doncaster Dragons Rugby Club mascot.

The students also showcased their latest work at the annual Doncaster College and University Centre Doncaster Fashion Show on 21st and 22nd May which the Crown Hotel were delighted to support in their commitment as partner to the Doncaster College. The event was attended by buyers, stylists, Saville Row tailors, local and national press and designers including Simon Parchment, who has worked with Dizzee Rascal, Minni Driver and Kelly Rowland.

Guests at the Rutland Hotel in Sheffield have proven that just £1 can go a long way by donating invaluable funds to a ground-breaking local charity.The Rutland have handed over a cheque for £3,600 to Neurocare, which raises money for the Neurosciences Department at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital in the City.

Residents at the Rutland Hotel each donated £1, which will go towards the purchase of life-saving equipment for patients with debilitating neurological conditions such as brain tumours, multiple sclerosis and epilepsy.

Sheffield’s Owlerton Stadium has today announced the launch of a new business partnership with two of the city’s largest, independently owned hotels.

The Rutland Hotel on Glossop Road and The Cutlers Hotel in the heart of Sheffield’s theatre land, have joined forces with the venue to provide an added value experience for customers and a way to encourage tourism in the region.

Budding young ‘Beckhams’ at Redmires Rangers Football Club are modelling a new look this season with brand new shirts - sponsored by the exclusive Rutland Hotel in Sheffield.
Sheffield’s largest independent hotel has teamed up with Redmires Rangers FC Under 11’s team in a sponsorship deal for the 2008/2009 season.

The new team, which was put together just a year ago to play in the ‘Ideas2develop’ Sunday League,’ plays in the umbrella of Hallam & Redmires Football Club - one of the largest and oldest clubs in Yorkshire.

The young team is trained by Football Association qualified coaches and is managed by Alistair Eaton, who has been involved in local youth team football for many years.
